Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage creates club history in a key European match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.
At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him playing time in pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Manchester.
