UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
