Significant Turmoil Forecasted: Britain's Worst-Case Global Warming Scenarios Unveiled by Researchers

The gravest projected effects of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a blistering 4C rise in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot surge in sea level. Another scenario foresees a plunge of 6C in temperature following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and energy needs.

Credible Events, Not Forecasts

These impacts, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are seen as low probability but credible. The team stated that these scenarios plugged a hole in risk assessment that had left the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.

"The climate extremes we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are possible," commented Nigel Arnell who directed the research. "Britain has been making preparations lacking the frameworks to assess worst-case scenarios. We've now given planners what they need to plan for environmental results they hope never happen, but must not overlook."

A Suite of Extreme Weather Projections

Another collection of dire projections details the possible scale of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that temperatures could soar in some months by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be triple normal levels.

The probability of the catastrophic events coming to pass remains uncertain due to unknown factors about what steps will be enacted to tackle global warming and how the climate system will behave. This research was compared to security threat evaluations or scenario planning for economic stability.

  • Four-Degree Warming: Planetary heating exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation collapses or if vicious cycles like the tropical forests perishing release its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is weakening and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A complete failure beginning in 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would struggle enormously and water resources would be fundamentally reshaped," explained the lead researcher.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if ice sheets in the polar regions melt abruptly, submerging coastal cities and towns. Unlike the other scenarios, this threat is already understood by coastal engineers.
  • Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is rapidly cleaned up. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from burning coal block sunlight from reaching the ground.

Preparing for the Worst

The severe models could be utilized in planning the development of major projects, including housing developments, nuclear power stations and water management networks. Knowledge about these environmental threats could also speed the push to slash fossil fuel emissions.

The research developed the worst-case scenarios using a mix of past data and records, climate models and climate physics. These outcomes exclude potential global problems like the devastation of food supplies and increased conflict.

The project was commissioned as part of a official climate resilience programme. Previous assessments have cautioned that too little consideration was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

An independent advisory body has said that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and evaluate the threats for four degrees. Past policy documents have been described as being "very weak" by certain experts.
