Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unneeded gifts can be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Sale
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. This unusual assortment could include objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale in a public auction by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline has not been finalized, although the goal is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting a selection of charitable causes.
Palazzo Chigi Collection
The presents are currently kept in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been sitting unused indefinitely.
A complete inventory is yet to be officially released, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was reviewed by officials. The query raised if a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.
A Global Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the oddest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her allies, with winning over international counterparts and making Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale represents a unconventional way to handle the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a political career.
