Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
